You may think that the cheese hedgehog is a 1970’s invention but in fact this party favourite was a popular Tudor tradition. Legend has it that a creative chef in the royal kitchen was inspired to make one, prompted by pictures of hedgehogs rolling around in vineyards, collecting grapes for their children, that she had seen in medieval bestiaries. This is a recreation of a typical Sussex cheese and grape hedgehog that I believe would have graced the tables at the wedding of Anne of Cleves and King Henry VIII.
