​In April this year, I was visited by a young artist named Tamaki Iwao, whom I met last year in Japan. She was keen to show her work while she was in the UK, so my friend Claire, who owns The Meiklejohn Gallery in Lewes, kindly allowed us to have a pop-up exhibition of our work for a fortnight.

Tamaki’s work is very joyful; it inspired me to respond accordingly. We share a few heroes, especially Alexander Calder, so I took Calder’s circus and Tamaki’s work as inspiration for my pieces.

The work for this show was a continuation of my exploration into ways to add interest to my ceramics without using coloured glazes or underglazes. I used waste plastic to add colour to pieces made with black clay, and displayed them in colourful boxes.
