ANNE OF CLEVES' HOUSE
In my imagination, much of my work is commissioned by a fictitious arts foundation, The Fondamento dello Scherzo ( @fondamento_scherzo_ ), entirely imagined by artists @isobelxsmith , @jolambart and me. The rest of this text is make-believe.
In January 2026, I was contacted by The Fondamento dello Scherzo because Heidi, only child of Fabrice Scherzo, one of the three foundation directors, was engaged to be married at a Tudor-themed wedding next summer. Heidi has a degree from Sussex University in medieval history and a PhD in marriage and divorce in the Tudor period. She spent her internship with Isobel, Jo and me during the period when we were excavating the site at Slynde. The couple plan to make Lewes their marital home next Autumn. Once negotiations are complete, Fabrice plans to give them Anne of Cleves house in Lewes as a wedding present.
I was thrilled to be tasked with designing the bride’s accessories and all the celebration details to make their wedding stand out from other recent celebrity weddings.
A highlight was working with the famous Holbein Patisserie to make gingerbread likenesses of the couple, to be given as favours to guests at the wedding breakfast. Fig. 4 shows my clay sketches so far. The finished design will be pressed into clay to make a mould for the gingerbread.
In September this year, my work, together with pieces from Isobel and Jo, went on display at Anne of Cleves' House in Lewes in our show, titled Snog, Marry, Avoid. (TRUE).
